Broadway is seeing a fabulous trend in the last several years with shows like Riverdance, The Last Ship, Bright Star, Come From Away, and The Band’s Visit, and Indecent. The result is that the traditional music scenes of several cultures are seeing the same musicians that play their dances and festivals on Broadway! Having played in two of these shows, and with friends in all of them, Grammy Winner Lisa Gutkin (of the Klezmatics) is proud to present the first of her series “Broadway Folk” as her contribution toward keeping the music of all of our ancestors alive, vibrant, and on big stages!
Brought together by Indecent, the Tony Award winning play created by Rebecca Taichman and Paula Vogel that took Broadway by storm in the spring of 2017, Lisa Gutkin (The Last Ship, Klezmatics) Matt Darriau (Klezmatics, Ballin’ the Jack), Uri Sharlin (Natalie Merchant, Play Me A Story), Zoe Aqua (Tsibele, Litvakus) and Doug Wieselman (Bill Frisell, Jerome Robbins, Flying Karamazov Brothers) are all leading musicians in the world music scene. “Broadway Folk” gives the audience a chance to see this All Star band stretch out, improvise and play some of their own compositions, as well as the music written by Lisa Gutkin and Aaron Halva for Indecent.
Indecent is being aired on PBS’s Great Performances on November 17. Please join usat Jalopy for a 7:30 concert ($15) and 9pm screening, along with hors d’oeuvres ($15) (or come early for dinner in their space next door!) $25 for both.
