A People is a mosaic of eras and lands; generations and deserts; people lost and people searching; angry young women; sad old men; angels; history; memory; and imagination. A multigenerational, kaleidoscopic journey across time & culture, A People is a spectacle of ambitious scope, exploring and exploding the history & present of the Jewish diaspora. The play transports its audience to a timeless festival atmosphere in which 2,000 years can pass in one hour, spinning a buoyant bittersweet tale of fellowship and longing, all while wrestling with the question: What is my relationship to those who came before me? And are we – or is anyone – still a people?
Lauren Feldman is a queer, feminist playwright (and circus artist) who pens plays that are wildly theatrical but deeply intimate. Formally ambitious plays that move, take up space. Plays that are questing, wrestling, asking. Plays without answers. Plays about women and queers, plays about outsiders and searchers. Plays grappling with voice and agency, opportunity and access, history and its wake. Plays about the human connection. Plays that seek to be a greater, communal, rare theatrical event in which something transcendent transpires – for those both onstage & off.
