To have an opportunity to bring this world, this very intimate, Jewish old world to the public is astoundingly important to me

— Lisa Gutkin via Playbill

Grammy Award Winning fiddler/singer/composer Lisa Gutkin took Broadway and then the Guthrie Theater by storm last year with her exquisite co-score and performance in Indecent (Paula Vogel’s Tony award-winning play with music). A veteran of The Cedar stage with the “Downtown Celtic Band” Whirligig and the Klezmatics, she will be joined by veterans of the Minneapolis music scene and her band from Indecent, Pat O’Keefe (winds) and Spencer Chandler (accordion, guitar and banjo) to celebrate Hanukah with some cranking Klezmer dance tunes, original songs and improvisations, and - of course - selections from Indecent.

With a passion toward keeping ancestral music vibrant, Lisa Gutkin has created wonderfully powerful productions in both the theater and concert worlds, using the traditional sounds of various communities. Surrounding herself with musicians and audiences who share that same passion, it’s no wonder that one of the first “out of town” concerts for Whirligig in the late 90’s was at the global-centric Cedar Cultural Center.

That was her first visit to Minneapolis - a city she has been to many times since, with the Klezmatics (with whom she won a 2006 Grammy for best contemporary world music album of the year). It’s also a city she has fallen in love with, mostly because of the Guthrie Theater and Pat and Spencer, whose multicultural stylings include Brazilian, Turkish, American and Irish musics.

Bringing Yiddish to Broadway and beyond, Indecent traces the history of the real life playwright, Sholem Asch, and his Yiddish play, written in 1906. The God of Vengeance was translated into English, and subsequently shutdown when it got to Broadway in 1923 - allegedly for a lesbian kiss. It questions the concept of decency, and celebrates love, tolerance, and theater.

The play won two Tonys, played in Israel, and is now appearing in over 25 cities this year alone. The first of these cities, and Lisa’s first “out of town” music director’s job, was where? In Minneapolis! At the Guthrie Theater last winter, with Pat and Spencer.

The Minnesota Playlist said “the three piece Klezmer Band is awesome”. The Twin Cities Pioneer Press said the play is “carried along by a trio of musicians (Spencer Chandler, Lisa Gutkin and Pat O’Keefe) whose virtuosity and versatility grease transitions and conjure mood so effectively that the music is almost a character unto itself”. Lisa agrees, and is thrilled to give this “character” a chance to shine on its own.

Lisa Gutkin has had a storied career that reflects the eclectic nature of her life, passion, and creativity. A cameo performance in Sex and the City, a seat in Sting’s band for The Last Ship, and a CD of original songs produced by John Lissauer have taken her a long way from her beginnings as back up musician to the Fast Folk songwriters’ collective (which included artists such as Lucy Kaplansky, Richard Shindell, Shawn Colvin, and Suzanne Vega).

Praised for her “hauntingly emotional” vocals by the L.A. Times, Lisa’s song writing has also been lauded. “Gonna Get Through This World”, co-written with Woody Guthrie, was described by Pete Seeger as “a piece of genius”.

In her ventures as soloist and band leader, Lisa might swing seamlessly from Klezmer to the blues, or between traditional Irish and Appalachian sounds. She might even put the violin down altogether, pick up a tenor guitar, and sing one of her own universally resonant songs. Or she might tell a story from the play she is creating (which had its first out of town workshop in - of course - Minneapolis!). Wherever she goes, Lisa has an uncanny way of taking her audiences with her.

Pat O'Keefe is active in a variety of musical genres. He has performed as a soloist with symphony orchestras, wailed away for belly dancers, and rocked samba in the streets. He is the woodwind player for the ensemble Zeitgeist, and also performs with Batucada do Norte, Choro Borealis, No Territories, and The Maithree Ensemble. In 2015 he was awarded a Performing Musician Fellowship from the McKnight Foundation. He teaches at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls.

Spencer Chandler is a multi-dimensional, semi-delusional artist who keeps changing hats and donning different disguises. As an actor he toured the world and Broadway as a wordless clown in Slava's Snowshow, with the venerable National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, in the independent film, Mendy: A Question of Faith, and was a regular contributor to the New York television market with memorable turns on Law and Order. He has appeared onstage at the Guthrie (Paula Vogel's Indecent) and as a songwriter/composer across genres such as bluegrass, rock-pop, and folk. His short films have been recognized at festivals around the country, and as a playwright he was honored with the David Mamet Award from A.C.T in San Francisco for what was hailed as a miniature masterpiece: "Bringing Up Mamet." A native of San Francisco and twenty year resident of New York, Spencer founded and maintains the nonprofit arts catalyst Cannery Works, responsible for launching new artists. He currently makes his home in Edina. You can find him most Sundays at Keegan's Irish pub playing traditional Irish music on mandolin, banjo, or button accordion.”

The Klezmatics emerged from the multicultural churn of New York's East Village in the late '80s to become one of the leading standard bearers of the ongoing klezmer revival. Legend has it that the band's founding members -- violinist Alicia Svigals, bassist Dave Lindsay, clarinetist Rob Chavez -- met in 1985 after reading an ad in the Village Voice looking for anyone interested in playing klezmer. The threesome soon added veteran Klezmer trumpeter Frank London, singer Lorin Sklamberg and others and was soon putting an adventurous new, post-punk spin on traditional Yiddish music.

Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah

Woody Guthrie, father of American folk music, writer of “This Land Is Your Land,” also wrote Hanukkah songs!

In 1942, Woody Guthrie moved to Brooklyn and soon, through his mother-in-law (the renowned Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblatt), he became involved with the Coney Island Jewish Community. He wrote songs about Hanukkah, about Jewish history and about spiritual life.

After his death in 1967, these songs sat forgotten in archives. “Lost” for almost 30 years, Guthrie’s Hanukkah lyrics were discovered in 1998 by Woody’s daughter, Nora Guthrie. She was so inspired by what she found, she asked the Klezmatics to write new music for the lyrics.
Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah is the second recorded release of this amazing material. Deftly intermingling Klezmer with American folk and bluegrass,Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah is destined to become a holiday classic for generations to come.

This delightful collection of songs, including ‘Hanuka’s Flame”, “Hanuka Gelt”, “Spin Dreydl Spin”, “(Do the) Latke Flip-Flip” and others, is among the best of Guthrie’s work, and the Klezmatics playful renditions cast a new light on the Hanukkah tradition.

Since their emergence more than 30 years ago, the Klezmatics have raised the bar for Eastern European Jewish music, made aesthetically, politically and musically interesting recordings, inspired future generations, created a large body of work that is enduring, and helped to change the face of contemporary Yiddish culture. Often called a “Jewish roots band,” the Klezmatics have led a popular revival of this ages-old, nearly forgotten art form.

They have performed in more than 20 countries and released 11 albums to date—most recently the album Apikorsim (Heretics), produced by Danny Blume (who helped the band win a Grammy in 2006) and the first of the band’s albums to feature only the 6 members. On their Grammy-winning 2006 album Wonder Wheel, the Klezmatics set a dozen previously unsung Woody Guthrie lyrics to music, widening their stylistic base by largely diverging from klezmer. They have also recently served as the subject of a feature-length documentary film, The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground.

During their third-of-a-century existence the Klezmatics have collaborated with such brilliant artists as violinist Itzhak Perlman, Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner and Israeli vocal icon Chava Alberstein, plus many other prominent artists working within multiple genres.

Today, with three original members—Lorin Sklamberg (lead vocals, accordion, guitar, piano), Frank London (trumpet, keyboards, vocals) and Paul Morrissett (bass, tsimbl, vocals)—still on board, alongside longtime members Matt Darriau (kaval, clarinet, saxophone, vocals) and Lisa Gutkin (violin, vocals), the Klezmatics are without a doubt the most successful proponents of klezmer music in the world.

The Klezmatics’ music is rooted in but is not a strictly traditional variety of the klezmer genre. Rather it is a comfortable hybrid that appeals equally to those with no previous exposure to the music and those already familiar with it.

“Klezmer,” says London, “is the unique sound of East European Jewishness. It has the power to evoke a feeling of other-worldliness, of being there and then, of nostalgia for a time and place that we never knew.”

Although tradition is at the core of what they do, since the beginning the Klezmatics have adapted to the artistic sensibilities of a contemporary world.  “Klezmer has everything you want, ethnically, and yet it’s so intertwined with American culture,” says Morrissett. “We want to make sure that we are part of a living tradition, and living traditions change; they don’t stay in a pickled form.”

Indeed, the Klezmatics are very much of the modern world. Says London, “By putting forth a consistent and coherent political and aesthetic Yiddish/klezmer music that embraces our political values—supporting gay rights, workers’ rights, human rights, universal religious and spiritual values expressed through particular art forms—and eschewing the aspects of Yiddish/Jewish culture that are nostalgic, tacky, kitschy, nationalistic and misogynistic, we have shown a way for people to embrace Yiddish culture on their own terms as a living, breathing part of our world and its political and aesthetic landscape.”

“People are quite detached from their Jewish roots,” says Gutkin. “The Klezmatics fill an incredible void.”

Formed in New York in 1986, the Klezmatics quickly built a devoted following that expanded outward once word spread about this exotic new band that was bringing klezmer back from the abyss. For some fans, the group’s appeal went beyond the music itself. “People have a need for something to hold onto,” says Gutkin. “They want to be part of something.”

Throughout the years a wide range of lyrical ideas has inhabited the Klezmatics’ songs, ranging from contemporary issues of global import facing each of us to matters of intimate love, and from leftist politics to age-old Jewish mysticism. “From early on,” says Sklamberg, “even before we made a conscious effort to make the music our own, we decided that if we sang songs, they would be ones we believed in.”

Live at Town Hall, the newest Klezmatics release, captures the group’s March 5, 2006 20th anniversary concert at the New York venue. Recorded in conjunction with the On Holy Ground documentary, the set features a cross-section of music from throughout the Klezmatics’ history, and includes a lengthy list of special guests, among them previous members David Krakauer and Margot Leverett, who had never recorded with the band until this gig. The repertoire draws from the group’s earliest days and material as recent as the Guthrie adaptations.

Says London, “We wanted to celebrate being together for so many years with everyone who has been part of our family.”

Indeed, the Klezmatics have always been as much about community as music. Says Sklamberg, “The energy and support we received from the local community fueled the band, rather than it being a particular sensibility. At the very least it allowed us the freedom to be us.”

A quarter-century after their formation, the Klezmatics remain committed to their music and to the close relationship they share with their fans. “In 1986,” says Sklamberg, “I never imagined that preserving, disseminating and helping to redefine Yiddish music would become my life’s work. “I certainly don’t think we sound like anyone else.”

Indeed, they don’t. Never have and—should the Klezmatics (hopefully) last another 25 years—it’s a safe guess that no one else ever will!

Award-winning activist duo, Emma’s Revolution, and Grammy-winning violinist/composer, Lisa Gutkin, join forces for Hope & Resistance Concert

Emma’s Revolution is the dynamic, award-winning activist duo of Pat Humphries & Sandy O, whose songs have been sung for the Dalai Lama, praised by Pete Seeger, and covered by Holly Near. Lisa Gutkin is the Grammy Award winning violinist, singer, actor, and composer, best known as a member of the acclaimed Klezmatics and most recently for her musical score and performance in the Broadway hit, “Indecent.”

With beautiful harmonies and genre-defying eclecticism, Emma’s Revolution delivers the energy and strength of their convictions, creating new standards in the art and culture of justice. Their latest CD, Revolution Now garnered acclaim from radio stations across the country, including Top Artist #20 (after Joan Baez) and Top Song #25 (after Rhiannon Giddens) for “Sing People Sing”the duo’s loving tribute to the late Pete Seeger. “Pete was a friend, mentor and constant inspiration to me. He’s the reason I write and perform justice music and I was honored to be at his bedside as he passed, singing his songs back to him in gratitude for all he had done,” said Humphries. Described as “fervent and heartfelt” by The New York Times, the duo won Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition and were the first recipients of the Phil Ochs Award. “Our music is inextricably linked to our experience as activists,” explains Sandy O. “We look at the world, seeing what can be done to create peace and justice and celebrating the often unsung work already being done.” The duo translates that vision into songs that can be joyful, intense, humorous or thought-provoking and always, Sandy O adds, “with the goal of leaving our audiences inspired, hopeful, empowered, engaged. . . and singing!” Emma’s Revolution consistently delivers performances so powerful, audiences leap to their feet to demand more.

Lisa Gutkin will add exquisite and versatile violin accompaniment to Emma’s Revolution’s songs, that span styles from folk to jazz and funk to rock, covering issues from reproductive justice to child separation at the border and Black Lives Matter to the sustaining power of love. The trio will also perform Gutkin’s and Emma’s Revolution’s settings of Woody Guthrie’s lyrics. Guthrie wrote more than 750,000 words in his lifetime and melodies for many of his lyrics never existed or didn’t survive. Over the years, Woody’s daughter, Nora Guthrie, has invited artists to search the archives and create musical settings of these lyrics. Lisa’s settings have been especially lauded. “Gonna Get Through This World,” from the Klezmatics’ Grammy-winning CD, “Wonder Wheel,” was described by Pete Seeger as “a piece of genius”. The trio will perform the song with Emma’s Revolution adding vocal harmonies, guitar and banjo accompaniment to Lisa’s vocals and violin.

Grammy Award winning violinist, singer, actor, and composer Lisa Gutkin is best known as a member of the acclaimed Klezmatics, and most recently for her musical score and performance in the Broadway hit Indecent. A two-time Tony Award Winner, Indecent was named #3 in Time Magazine’s Top 10 Broadway Plays and Musicals of 2017. A cameo performance in Sex and the City, a seat in Sting’s band for The Last Ship, and a CD of original songs produced by John Lissauer have taken her a long way from her beginnings as back up musician to the Fast Folk songwriters’ collective. Praised for her “hauntingly emotional” vocals by the L.A. PIONEERS OF THE KLEZMER REVIVAL

With more than 30 years and 11 albums under their belt, The Klezmatics still apply the absolute standard in the klezmer-music, Yiddish dance music in which laughter and tears are one line. This iconic New York Group, strongly connected with the then underground scene around the Knitting Factory (back in the day), never kept to the pure klezmer-conventions. With Klezmer as starting point, you will hear influences from Arab, Balkan, Celtic, Latin, and African music as jazz and punk. In addition, the focus on contemporary themes such as human rights, social justice, and anti-fundamentalism, it becomes clear the music of the group is not just wild and provocative, but also why the group caused a Klezmer revival in the late 80’s/early 90s that still continues.

The most famous and smartest klezmer group in the universe

The Klezmatics are globally-renowned world music superstars - and the only klezmer band to win a Grammy award. The Klezmatics emerged out of the vibrant cultural scene of New York City’s East Village in 1986. The band, conducted by trumpet player Frank London and singer-accordionist Lorin Sklamberg, became worldwide renown by blending klezmer, steeped in Eastern European Jewish tradition and spirituality, with contemporary themes such as human rights and anti-fundamentalism and eclectic musical influences, including Arab, African, Latin and Balkan rhythms, jazz and punk.

In the course of over three decades and eleven albums, they have stubbornly continued making music that is wild, mystical, provocative, reflective and ecstatically danceable. Even on their latest album, Apikorsim, the Klezmatics redefine the Yiddish music. Apikorsim (heretics) are people who challenge orthodox views. The Klezmatics are undoubtedly unorthodox. Their songs proclaim the rights of refugees and workers, sing for a better world and mourn for those who lose their lives. They alternate between praising God and doubting the nature of his existence.

30 years of transforming the Yiddish and klezmer world. 30 years of Yiddish music as a voice for social justice, change, the underdogs and oppressed. 30 years of “heretical” behavior, of questioning, of going against accepted beliefs and dissenting from established dogma.  The Klezmatics are world-renowned and Grammy-winning superstars of the klezmer world.  They erupted out of New York City’s East Village in 1986 and revitalized klezmer for the new century with music that is steeped in Eastern European Jewish tradition and spirituality, while incorporating contemporary themes such as human rights and anti-fundamentalism with eclectic musical influences including Arab, African, Latin and Balkan rhythms, jazz and punk. They have released nine albums of wild, spiritual, provocative, reflective, and ecstatically danceable music, forever redefining and transcending traditional labels.
