New Jewish Voices: Selection from 'A People' by L.M. Feldman

Free Registration

Featuring Lisa Gutkin!

A People is a spectacle of ambitious scope, exploring and exploding the history & present of the Jewish diaspora.

Join us in introducing important new voices of Jewish identity with Yale graduate and acclaimed playwright, Lauren Feldman. Feldman’s work is known as theatrical, deeply intimate and ambitious. Come and discover the personal exploration of her Jewish identity in “A People”.

A People is a mosaic of eras and lands; generations and deserts; people lost and people searching; angry young women; sad old men; angels; history; memory; and imagination. A multigenerational, kaleidoscopic journey across time & culture, A People is a spectacle of ambitious scope, exploring and exploding the history & present of the Jewish diaspora. The play transports its audience to a timeless festival atmosphere in which 2,000 years can pass in one hour, spinning a buoyant bittersweet tale of fellowship and longing, all while wrestling with the question: What is my relationship to those who came before me? And are we – or is anyone – still a people?

Lauren Feldman is a queer, feminist playwright (and circus artist) who pens plays that are wildly theatrical but deeply intimate. Formally ambitious plays that move, take up space. Plays that are questing, wrestling, asking. Plays without answers. Plays about women and queers, plays about outsiders and searchers. Plays grappling with voice and agency, opportunity and access, history and its wake. Plays about the human connection. Plays that seek to be a greater, communal, rare theatrical event in which something transcendent transpires – for those both onstage & off.

'Romerika': The History of Yiddish Theatre, Featuring Maestro Aaron Kula

$18 per ticket

Featuring Lisa Gutkin!

Join Maestro Aaron Kula and award-winning entertainer Avi Hoffman as they celebrate the historical origins of the Yiddish Theatre in Romania and its evolution to mainstream world culture. In the early to mid 19th century, Jewish entertainers began to perform throughout Eastern Europe. Starting with the Badchonim – the Jewish wedding-jesters and the traveling Klezmer musicians, this mixture of music and melodrama became very popular with the Jewish masses. Avrom Goldfadn, the Father of Yiddish Theatre, began writing songs and sketches and eventually moved to Iasi, Romania.

The success of the Yiddish theatre traveled with those escaping the hardships of Jewish life in Europe, as they came to America to find safety and build a new life. The Jewish immigrants flocked to the many theatres on 2nd Avenue in New York, where they could see the great stars of the Yiddish theater – Maurice Schwartz, Boris Thomashevsky, Jacob P. Adler and Molly Picon.

The Yiddish theatres became the foundation for the Golden Age of American creativity which influenced every aspect of world culture. From music to comedy to film and television, the Yiddish theatre which began in Romania, went on to become the greatest influence not only on American culture, but on the stages of the entire world.

The Klezmatics aren’t just the best band in the klezmer vanguard, they rank among the best bands on the planet. Jewish traditional music is just the starting point for songs that jump, rock and swing—sometimes all at the same time.

Time Out New York

The Klezmatics transcend genres, blending klezmer with aching shtetl melodies, raucous Latin stomps, wild jazz riffs, and provocative Arabic, African, American, and Balkan rhythms. The Klezmatics will be presenting a contagious celebration of Hanukkah, marrying their soulful and ebullient Jewish roots to Woody Guthrie’s poignantly mesmerizing lyrics.

In 1942, Woody Guthrie moved to Brooklyn, New York, and soon, through his mother-in-law (the renowned Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblatt), he became involved with the Coney Island Jewish community. He wrote songs about Hanukkah, about Jewish history, and about spiritual life. After his death in 1967, these songs sat forgotten in archives. “Lost” for almost thirty years, Guthrie’s Hanukkah lyrics were discovered in 1998 by Woody’s daughter, Nora Guthrie. She was so inspired by what she found, she asked the Klezmatics to write new music for the lyrics.

This delightful collection of songs, including “Hanuka’s Flame,” “Hanuka Gelt,” “Spin Dreydl Spin,” “(Do the) Latke Flip-Flip,” and others, is among the best of Guthrie’s work, and the Klezmatics’ playful renditions cast a new light on the Hanukkah tradition.

"...one hot fiddler" - Cyndi Lauper
"...hauntingly emotional lead vocal" - L.A. times

Lisa Gutkin is best known as the Grammy Award-winning violinist, singer and songwriter of the renowned Klezmatics, and for her score and performance in the Tony Award winning play Indecent, by Paula Vogel. She has co-authored songs with Anne Sexton, Maggie Dubris, and Woody Guthrie, performed and composed for Sex and the City, played in Sting’s musical The Last Ship, and is a MacDowell Fellow.

Back in the 90s, backstage at Ben Freed's Muscoot Farm Bluegrass Festival, Mark Murphy (bass, cello), Michael Sassano (guitar, mandolin), Wayne Fugate, (mandolin), and Lisa Gutkin, (fiddle, tenor guitar, voice), gathered for a jam, intending to go their separate ways to their own bands once the spur-of-the-moment music making was over. Instead, Lisa pulled out one of her quirky originals.

The four were on fire, and when Ben came around to hear what the commotion was about, the newly minted band was on the main stage 20 minutes later.

”Lisa's Pieces," a name that has stuck through the years, gathers occasionally to lovingly reform their impromptu band, with its foot stomping, Irish-y, Jewish-y, Bluegrass-y, special something that Lisa is so well known for.

The Klezmatics at Klezmerwelten 2019

After their legendary concert at the Klezmerwelten 2012, you don't have to introduce the Klezmatics to anyone in Gelsenkirchen and the Ruhr area - but maybe there are still some who weren't there at the time.

If any Klezmer revival band deserves the title of "Superstars," then it's certainly the Klezmatics. What began in 1986 in New York's East Village is today a story against all odds, for preservation with constant renewal, always driven by new, creative ideas, sounds and concepts, crowned by concerts in more than 20 countries and a Grammy Award.

The Klezmatics have reinvented Yiddish music over and over again during this time, have made legendary recordings, and still sound like no other Klezmer band on this planet. Carried by the magical voice of Lorin Sklamberg and instrumentally ingenious musicians such as Frank London or Broadway star Lisa Gutkin, they have just recorded their new album Apikorsim, which brings them back to their roots - groovy Klezmer Music and Yiddish songs in a completely unorthodox style. They sing for a better world, praise Go,d and and always remain skeptical. This is the sound and concept of a band that has fascinated and captivated their audiences for more than 30 years.

Look forward to a concert at the Hans-Sachs-Haus - secure your tickets in time!
