The Klezmatics, the internationally acclaimed, Grammy Award-winning modern klezmer outfit, was founded in New York City in 1986 and has been performing around the world since then. Blending instrumental and vocal virtuosity and experimentation with theatricality firmly rooted in klezmer and Yiddish tradition, the Klezmatics brought the revival of klezmer into the rock era, blazing the path for the klezmer renaissance with one foot in the shtetl and the other in the downtown avant-garde. The Klezmatics are Lorin Sklamberg, vocals, piano, and guitar; Frank London, trumpet and keyboards; Matt Darriau, clarinet, saxophone, and recorders; Lisa Gutkin, violin; Paul Morrisett, bass and tsimbl; and Richie Barshay, drums.

Mountain City Traditional Arts presents Call in the Klezmorim workshop and concert
1 pm Workshop with Lisa and Pete Rushefsky
Lisa Gutkin plays klezmer (the music of the Ashkenazy Jews of Eastern Europe) with a nod to her grandparents and a creativity born from her days as a NYC freelance musician. Her playing and stories are fun and poignant, and her voice is
“hauntingly emotional.” - L..A. Times
In March of 2020 when the world locked down, Lisa shifted a cancelled workshop and concert onto Zoom, and it was so deeply appreciated that the workshop has continued weekly to date! with students from all over the world. Eventually her students started meeting and playing together, and when Lisa was back on the road, they hosted garden and house concerts for her.
“Call in the Klezmorim” grew from a desire to continue and build on this beautifully intimate new tradition. It showcases Lisa on violin, tenor guitar, and vocals - as a soloist, as a bandleader to the klezmorim (klezmer musicians) and as an educator.

Joe Hurley's All-Star Irish Rock Revue - 25th Anniversary Concert
$20 at the door
A Grammy award winner with The Klezmatics, a composer/music director/performer in the Tony award winning show Indecent, and a bandmate in Sting's show The Last Ship, Lisa Gutkin brings a lot to the table when she performs.
But "back in the day" Lisa played Irish music like crazy, and performed with luminaries in the Irish scene: John Whelan, Cathy Ryan, Whirligig (with Cillian Vallely, now of Lunasa), John, Redmond, Tommy Sands, and lots of others.
Lisa's fiddling is pristine, lilting, and very powerful, and in this warm up to St Patrick's Day, she will create an atmosphere so warm, you will think you are at the fireplace in one of her favorite pubs in Rostrevor or Sligo, her Irish homes away from home.
Lisa Gutkin is a singer, songwriter, fiddler and composer living and working in New York City.
