The Klezmatics @ SFJAZZ online at Fridays at Five

$5.00 a month membership

The GRAMMY-winning klezmer superstars made their SFJAZZ Center debut with this inspiring concert filmed in December 2015, performing seasonal music from their 2006 album Happy Joyous Hanukkah that set lyrics by the late Woody Guthrie to their delightful original compositions. Led by the soaring vocals of multi-instrumentalist Lorin Sklamberg, Klezmatics jumpstarted the resurgence of the nearly-forgotten klezmer tradition and contemporized it with an irreverent dose of punk rock attitude, and since their inception, have been one of most visible faces of today’s Yiddish culture. They have collaborated with violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman and Pulitzer prize winner Tony Kushner, and have released eleven diverse albums, including the GRAMMY-winning Wonder Wheel and their most recent, Apikorsim.

For just $5 a month ($60 annually), you can become a Member and tune in each Friday at 5 PM (PT) for the latest concert. Make it a regular date. Bring a glass of wine and cozy up – we think you will discover that digital technology can reveal new dimensions of musical performance. Fridays at Five is not your typical video concert series; it is designed to take you inside the music.

The Music of Indecent (Lisa Gutkin, Christina Crowder, Matt Darriau) @ KlezKanada

Ticket Price: $20

Music is central to “Indecent,” a two-time Tony Award-winning play that has deeply moved audiences and critics since its 2015 debut. The production's on-stage musicians set the mood, evoke time and place, and create poignant transitions to help recount the controversy surrounding the play God of Vengeance by Sholem Asch. After touring for years in Europe and playing in the Bowery, Asch’s play moved up to Broadway in 1923, where the producer and cast were arrested and convicted on the grounds of obscenity (in part for featuring a kiss between two women).

Join Lisa Gutkin (co-composer, co-arranger, co-music director, and violinist for the Broadway production and music director for subsequent productions), Christina Crowder (music director and accordionist for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Portland Artists Repertory productions), and Matt Darriau (off Broadway and Broadway clarinetist) as they perform selections from “Indecent,” and share insight into its creation and performance. Q&A to follow.

Wednesdays at 8 With Lisa feat. Jordan Hirsch

Schmooze Fest with Jordan Hirsch this Wednesdays at 8 with Lisa Gutkin - who knows where we'll get to! (But surely, some trumpet will be heard.)

As usual, you can watch the show live on Facebook Live or on Zoom. If you'd like to get news on Lisa’s upcoming projects, subscribe to the email list on this website

Jordan Hirsch’s interest in Klezmer and Yiddish song goes back to his high school years in the 1970’s when he discovered Klezmer and Jazz trumpet icon Ziggy Elman on his parents Benny Goodman records, and the Klezmer clarinet sounds still frequently heard on NYC wedding bandstands. One of the last of “the old guys”, Jordan played with some of the greatest American Klezmer musicians, including Ray Musiker, Howie Lees, Paul Pincus, and Danny Rubinstein on countless Chasidic and Jewish music gigs starting in 1981. Jordan has taught And performed at Klezkanada and Yiddish New York, and was the lead trumpet for the recent critically acclaimed production of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish.

Wednesdays at 8 with Lisa feat. Fred Gillen Jr. & Jim Metzger

This “Wednesdays at 8 with Lisa,” celebrates Earth Day in a special belated online multimedia event with singer/songwriter Fred Gillen Jr. and photographer Jim Metzger. NYFA (New York Foundation For The Arts) grant recipient Fred Gillen Jr. has released eleven full-length albums, to great critical acclaim. He has performed all over the U.S. and Europe as a solo artist. From 2017 to 2019 he was music director of the Group The Greenheart, traveling to Nepal four times and India once, performing concerts to raise awareness of environmental activism. His songs have been featured on ABC's "All My Children," NPR's "Car Talk," CMJ's New Music Marathon Sampler, and in 2012 his version of Woody Guthrie's "I Ain't Got No Home" was featured on "Pete Remembers Woody," a collection of Pete Seeger's spoken stories about Woody Guthrie. interspersed with various artists' renditions of Guthrie's songs. Like Seeger and Guthrie, Gillen's lyrics often reflect both the hope and despair of the human condition, while his music illustrates the diversity of influences in the air when he was growing up in the 1970's. His live performances are spontaneous and full of storytelling, and he enjoys audience participation.

-

Jim Metzger: When I was 15 my father asked me what I wanted to do as a profession and I replied “I wanted to be a photographer for Life Magazine”. He said “you can’t make any money doing that”.

I got a degree in Architecture from Cornell University in 1977 and have been practicing since I graduated. I will get it right one of these days. But the joy of photography never left and I now split my time working on residential Architecture and photography.

I have been able to combine photography with a deep seated commitment to environmental and political causes I discussed being able to travel with “The Greenheart” as the band photographer for several years. In 2017 James Dean Conklin said it was time. I have had the extraordinary opportunity to travel with this wildly talented environmental activist band to Nepal three times and to India once in the last three years. Being able to bring a visual message of peace and environmental justice to and from half way around the world has finally allowed me to realize the dream I had as a 15 year old boy.

Wednesdays at 8 with Lisa - feat. Sarah Myerson & Ilya Shneyveys

Hey Folks!

I'm excited to announce that we will be returning April 29th with another installment of "Wednesdays at 8 With Lisa"! This time, we will be featuring special guests Cantor Sarah Myerson and accordionist Ilya Shneyveys as a dynamic duo. The pair form Shekedina, an exploration of divine names in many languages though musical meditation and sacred chanting. I hope you'll be able to join us for a concert filled with healing and beauty.

To join the Zoom meeting, subscribe to Lisa's mailing list on our website

I’m really looking forward to "being together" with you!

Shekedina: Shemot Kedoshim - Divine Names

Judaism has many names for the Divine; in Hebrew, in Aramaic, in Yiddish, in Ladino. Divine names spanning many genders. Names that speak to all of our desires and imaginings of the Divine: compassion and creation, strength and healing, intimate and unknowable.

Shekedina is an original musical exploration of these divine names. Join us in sacred chanting and meditation with Sarah Myerson, composer and cantor with a daily Yoga practice and Ilya Shneyveys, multi-instrumentalist and music producer.

Sarah Myerson is a cantor actively working to bridge the worlds of Jewish religion and Yiddish culture. Her love of klezmer music and background in folk dance drew her to study Yiddish dance at festivals and workshops. Since 2008 she has led Yiddish social dancing and taught workshops and private lessons in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Israel, and Australia. She has also coordinated the Yiddish Dance Workshop for Yiddish Summer Weimar (2018, 2019). To deepen her connection with Ashkenazi culture, Sarah has studied Yiddish language at YIVO (NY), the Arbeter Ring (NY), Beit Ben Yehuda (Jerusalem) and Tel Aviv University. Sarah received her bachelor’s degree in composition from the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, Australia. She continues to write and perform new Yiddish and sacred Jewish music, often accompanying herself on harmonium, banjolele, or percussion. Sarah received her cantorial investiture and Master of Sacred Music degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (NY), and her cantorial commission from the Cantors Assembly. She currently serves the community of Kane Street Synagogue in Brooklyn (NY).
